Vines Not Producing

I live in Northwestern Ontario and have enjoyed a Grapevine for 8 years. We live on a small lake with north winds, so we do get cool periods especially at night. My question is, what do I do to get grapes?? The vines are beautiful, but never any grapes. Right about now, (nearing end of June) the vines are covered in very small clusters that almost look like clusters of pollen, but then just drop off all over, and no grapes?? These clusters almost look like, if given a change to grow, would grow into grapes. What am I doing wrong?

It sounds like you may be growing a rootstock variety. I don't know how much you know about wine grapes but these plants are generally grafted varieties. The rootstock plants that are used in the grafting process tend to produce a small cluster which eventually falls off.

It looks like you are just letting the vine go where it wants to. If it is not a rootstock cultivar the maybe try some April pruning to promote the vine to produce some clusters. The harder you prune the vine back the greater the chance of it producing some clusters. You are trying to stress the vine a bit so it tries to generate fruit in order to replicate.

This years wood will have next years grapes. Do your winter pruning with this in mind. During bloom, stay out of the vineyard. Don't overwater because this can l ead to bunch stem nucroses where the bunches just drop off. Deficit water from berry set to verasion and then resume normal watering.

Your getting the flowers but no grapes, could be a mineral deficientcy or the weather conditions but over 8 years I would have thoughts you'd get a few bunches maturing. I'm wondering if you have a variety that requires another vine to complete the polination. Some grape vines are not self polinating. Do you know what the variety is?

I grow grape in southern Ontario. Latitude is the same as Minnesota. I have been very successful with cold hardy grapes like Marechel Foch. This varietal makes an excellent wine if not left on the skins too long.

I suggest you get a good book on pruning your vines properly and possibly planting a wind barrier of cedars along the north side of the vineyard in order to break the wind. I had a year where most clusters were full and it looked like a good year but then much to my surprise the flowers fell off. It was an extremely dry and cool year. Keep trying and reading, Perhaps you need a hardier grape variety. Try different pruning and training methods. Don't believe the snobs that tell you its impossible to grow grapes where you are. I'm successful and I make excellent wine and have a lot of fun.
