Hi :) I want to build a grape arbor/pergola on the south-west side of my white house and plant some grapes, mostly for eating and juice, perhaps one red, one white. Can anyone recommend some specific varieties? Thanks!
Hi Elly, You should be able to grow Sovereign Coronation and Interlaken in Nanaimo. Coronation is a seedless red labrusca grape from the breeding programme at Summerland, and Interlaken is a seedless white from Cornell (Geneva). They are both quite popular in BC. Himrod is an old standard white seedless in BC but I don't recommend it because at ripeness it shatters easily and all of the berries drop off when you try to pick it. Local nurseries should be able to obtain these plants, or as a last resort you can get cuttings from the CFIA repository at Sydney BC, on Vancouver Island.
I agree with Gary, I have one coronation plant that covers my entire pergola. It is a very vigorous growing vine that produces many large, purple, great tasting clusters. I don't spray mine because it is not very susceptible to mildew. Be careful of some of the older white table varieties because they can be susceptible to mildew.
