Grape Growers of Ontario Receive Welcomed News for the Juice Grape Industry

St. Catharines, ON (Tuesday, June 19, 2007): Today’s announcement by the Honourable Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs for the Province of Ontario to provide a financial assistance program in the amount of $3.8 million for juice grape growers is welcome news for the Grape Growers of Ontario.

“The plight of our juice grape growers who have been dealing with low market prices, a declining market and a juice grape plant closure has been well known in the agricultural community,” said Debbie Zimmerman, CEO of the Grape Growers of Ontario. She went on to say that “the assistance provided by the Ontario government today will not only assist our juice grape growers but will ensure our vineyards remain healthy.”

Bill George Jr., Chair of the Grape Growers of Ontario comments that “today’s announcement for our juice grape growers comes at a critical time in our grape growing season.” He further indicated that “it is the first step on our journey to helping our growers. We need to continue to move forward with a Program for the future for all growers. We look forward to the Federal government’s participation in such a Program.”

The Grape Growers of Ontario is the official organization that represents over 600 grower members of nearly 15.7 million vines on 17,800 acres in the province’s four growing areas: Niagara Peninsula, Pelee Island, Lake Erie North Shore and Prince Edward County and is the official lobby organization for our members.
